Today’s Guest: Sekou Andrews
At the time Sekou decided to pursue his dreams he was already working in one of the hardest jobs to have and to leave - a 5th grade teacher. Born and raised in ıerkeley, CA and Washing ton DC, Sekou received his Bachelor's degree in Sociology from Pitzer College with his eyes set on Law School, before3 accepting the challenge of teaching elementary school in South Central Los Angeles. But as his 4th year of teaching concluded, he know is voice was meant to reach further than the classroom. So he recorded his first spoken word CD and too the leap of faith.
Since that moment this poet, actor, musician and voice-over artist has won the National Poetry Slam championship twice shared the stage with Jay-Z, Stevie Wonder, Carlos Santana, Maroon 5, multiple symphony orchestras and has been featured on ABC World News, MSNBC, Good Morning America, HBO, Showtime, MTV, BET, plus several national commercial spots and 3 feature films. His work has inspired audiences across America through two national tours, THE UNDERGROUND POETS RAILROAD - which traveled the route of the Underground Railroad to raise funds for the families of fallen firefighters on 9/11 - and Declare Yourself - which registered over 1 million new voters. That first CD, plus his Kwanzaa holiday CD and his latest release "Poetic License<' have each earned multiple awards- including Album of the year and Mail Artist of the Year - making Sekou the most awarded artist in the nation's largest indie music organization.
In 2005 Sekou formed a creative partnership with Steve Connell and together they created two successful spoken word plays. "No Easy Choices" electrified crowds at the 12 Annual HBO U.S. Comedy Arts Festival in Aspen, CO and "The Word Begins" - a provocative journey exploring the power of words to define love, faith, race and humanity - enjoyed critical acclaim and 3 Helen Hayes Award nominations for its premiere runs in Washing DC and Los Angeles, CA. The duo has performed privately for the likes of Barack Obama, Oprah Winfrey, Hillary Clinton, Quincy Jones and Al Gore, and inspired sold-out crowds for countless high profile events/clients, including the Pasadena Pops Orchestra, Marian Anderson Awards, X-Prize, Global Green hundreds of school, community, fundraising, and political events, and the 2009 Inaugural Peace Ball.
In his latest venture Sekou has turned his attention toward inspiring the business world with "The Sekou Effect." Representing the cutting edge of event speaking as a Motivational Poet & Strategic Storyteller, he has defined the business of creating customized spoken word speeches and multimedia presentations that fuse the power of inspirational speaking, poetry, comedy, theater and storytelling to electrify the messages of such Fortune 500 companies as Kraft, Nike, eBay, General Mills, Time Warner and Microsoft, internet innovators PayPal and LinkedIn, premiere sports organizations the NBA and NCAA, as well as conferences and non-profits including Google Zeitgeist, TEDx, METal, SANG, Big Task Weekend, 100 Black Men of America, and Deepak Chopra's Sages & Scientists.
