Jason Coosner on Investing Coast 2 Coast Sucess Series with Pete ASMUS

Jason Coosner is a master dance teacher and national award-winning choreographer residing in Los Angeles, California. Jason holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Musical Theatre from the Professional Training Program at Elon University in North Carolina, where he studied dance under Nina Wheeler, Rebecca Hutchins, Linda Sabo, Margaret Rowland and Cherie Bower. He also received a full artistic scholarship from the Meadows School of the Arts and holds a Master of Fine Arts degree in Dance, with a concentration in Choreography from Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas.

During his professional studies, Jason had the privilege of learning under award winning jazz dance legend Danny Buraczeski and contemporary jazz master Max Stone. Throughout his graduate course work, Jason created three new fully-produced dance works and taught Jazz Dance for three semesters as faculty. While in Dallas, he served as the Assistant Artistic Director for Collin County Ballet Theatre. He was also the Director of Contemporary Dance at Hathaway Academy of Ballet, one of Dallas’ premiere pre-professional performing arts schools.

ARTISTIC PHILOSOPHY

Jason’s approach to teaching and dance is focused on opposition, alignment, strength and transitional phrasing. He firmly believes that it is only through the mastery of technique and the construction of action in choreography that the dancer begins to organically tap into the emotional life of the dance, generating performance from a place of absolute truth. It is this philosophy that fuels his passion for teaching, tirelessly working to help individual students reach their full artistic potential.

EXPERIENCE

Jason focuses his efforts on teaching contemporary dance technique throughout the Los Angeles area. He is a national adjudicator for dance competitions and the 1st Vice President of Dance Masters of America Chapter 1. Jason serves as an instructor and judge for national Dance Masters of America conventions, KAR and Rainbow.  As an internationally respected teacher of contemporary dance technique, Jason works hard to ensure that his students are consistently achieving top results at various competitions, most notably first place in the contemporary junior division at Youth America Grand Prix Los Angeles. His students are accepted into elite summer dance programs and universitiies.  His protégé was recently accepted as a full time student, on full scholarship to the School of American Ballet.

Due to his versatile approach and extensive network, Jason is frequently commissioned to create solos and group works for advanced competitive dancers. He has choreographed and directed a variety of musical productions, such as The Music ManAin’t Misbehavin’, Les Miserables, Return to the Forbidden Planet, Little Shop of Horrors, The Secret Garden and Cabaret. He he has also been commissioned by dance companies to create new works for them. More notably, Jason’s contemporary ballet Composition VII, commissioned by the Collin County Ballet Theatre, was selected for The Regional Dance America’s (RDA) southwest regional gala performance. It received the National Choreography Recognition Award, placing the work on the RDA National Choreography Plan. His work has also been performed at the Anaheim International Dance Festival and International Ballet Festival Miami.

Jason has an impressive scope of teaching experience, both domestically and abroad. He has taught master classes for the University of Indiana-Bloomington, Elon University, Collin County Ballet Theatre, Long Beach Ballet, Southbay Ballet, SoCal Ballet, Dancing Images, The Next Step, Burbank Youth Ballet, New World Dance and Yuri Grigoriev School of Ballet. He also taught high school students in Cape Town, South Africa who were majoring in Dance for their senior year.
